The 2022 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections will be held in February or March 2022, to elect the 117 members of the 16th Assembly of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The term of the current assembly elected in 2017 will expire on 27 March 2022 unless dissolved sooner.

In the 2017 Punjab Legislative Assembly election, the Indian National Congress won 77 out of 117 total seats. This landslide victory pushed the ruling alliance between Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to third place with only 18 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) came in second, winning 20 seats and forming the official opposition in Punjab.

The former Leader of the Opposition, Sukhpal Singh Khaira, joined Congress on 2 June 2021 along with Bhadaur MLA Pirmal Singh Dhaula and Maur MLA Jagdev Singh Kamalu. This reduced the AAP’s seat count from 19 to 16 in the Punjab Legislative Assembly.

New Developments and Political Alliances

Shiromani Akali Dal dissolved its alliance with the BJP, which had lasted over two decades, over the controversial Farm Bills passed by the BJP-controlled Indian Parliament in 2020.

Further, on 13 June 2021, SAD and BSP announced an alliance for the assembly election with 97-20 seat sharing. Mayawati also extended wishes to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on their 100th anniversary and said, “There are only a few parties who have served the nation this long. This is the oldest regional Party. “SAD, BSP alliance will come to power in Punjab with full majority in next Assembly elections” said BSP supremo Mayawati.

As part of seat sharing agreement, out of the total117 Assembly Seats in Punjab, SAD will contest 97 seats while BSP will field its candidates in 20 constituencies. SAD’s Sukhbir Badal announces Deputy CM will be from BSP if their alliance forms govt.

In addition, the Lok Insaaf Party and Aam Aadmi Party had also contested the 2017 election in an alliance but broke their alliance as well.

Punjab Assembly Elections: Some Facts

The 3 major contenders in this election are: –

1)The ruling Congress Party

which is determined to maintain power in the state after the party’s failure to win a single state in the recent Assembly Elections in the month of May. The party to decrease the massive anti0incumbency against it forced the ex-CM Captain Amarinder Singh to resign after he lost popularity with the people and his party’s MLAs who lost their confidence in his ability to retain power due to his failure to complete his poll promises.

The party appointed Charanjit Singh Channi as the CM of Punjab. He is the first Dalit CM of the state and the only incumbent Dalit CM throughout India.

The party may have got rid of some of the negative baggage by replacing the CM but has been unable to get rid of the infighting between its various factions which still continues. Prashant Kishor to be Congress’ poll strategist for 2022 Punjab election? CM Charanjit Singh Channi drops hint.

Ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday held a high-level meeting at his Delhi residence to address internal issues of the state’s party unit.

Gandhi, according to sources, asked the state leadership to focus on the upcoming elections and to unitedly fight the assembly elections in Punjab.

Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Punjab Congress Chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and former Punjab Congress Chief Sunil Jakhar attended the meeting.

As per the sources, Sunil Jakhar had also met Rahul Gandhi separately for almost an hour and expressed his views regarding the infighting in Punjab Congress.

2) BSP and SAD alliance

The Shiromani Akali Dal which under Sukhbir Singh Badal is raring to return to power and has tied up with the BSP to achieve this. Another defeat for the SAD may signal the end of the Badal Family in politics.

3) BJP and Punjab Lok Congress Alliance

Amarinder Singh, who named his political party as the Punjab Lok Congress, is hoping for a seat arrangement with the BJP for the upcoming elections.

4)The Aam Aadmi Party

The Aam Aadmi Party which sees an opening due to the massive anger and frustration against all major parties and leaders in Punjab and thus a chance to win power. The party has already promised a Sikh CM, but will it be able to unite and defeat the Congress?
