Sardar Patel once said if we have power, then we have to use to achieve the goal. If this power stops you from attaining a goal, you have to leave this power, which leads you in the wrong direction immediately. He met all the states king and was impressed with his devotion to the nation and asked them to join the biggest democracy of the world. Some states have declined to be part of India so that Sardar has to use the power to make them surrender their states for India, like the example of Hyderabad Nizam. Sardar said to be part of India or get ready to fight against the world’s biggest army. Kashmir issue left behind only when Nehru did not listen to Sardar Patel, and we are still suffering the ugly policy of the first prime minister of India (Jawaharlal Nehru). He did not hesitate to use the policy of ‘Saam-Daam-Dand-Bhed’ (friendship, give-and-take, punishment, and divide-and-rule) to achieve the goal that helps build India.
In countries like India, which are full of diversities- religions, castes, languages, civilizations, and cultures, must maintain unity. To establish the unity of the nation, the Government of India proposed the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas in 2014 since Sardar Patel is known for India’s integration.
Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day is celebrated on October 31 every year since 2014 to mark Iron Man of India’s birth anniversary–Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This year marks the 144th birth anniversary of the freedom fighter and an ace politician. Sardar Patel played a significant role in India’s integration (Ek Bharat) from over 560 princely states. To acknowledge his uniting the nation, India celebrates National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on his birth anniversary.
The official statement for National Unity Day by the Home Ministry of India cites that the National Unity Day “will provide an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity, and security of our country.”
The theme for the 2016 celebrations was “Integration of India”.
In 2018 the holiday was celebrated in Gujarat with the Statue of Unity’s Statue, which honours and depicts Patel. It is the largest statue in existence.
On this day, people recall the great works of Sardar Patel and acknowledge them by celebrating Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. People gathered and celebrate the unity of the nation by delivering speeches, spread knowledge, etc. Different events, webinars, and seminars are organised in other parts of the country.
