Birds of a Feather Flock Together

On 30th September on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti 2019 celebrations left front leaders visited West Bengal Congress headquarters in Kolkata. This was a unique scene which was never seen earlier. The delegation comprised of CP (M) state secretary Suryakant Mishra, left front chairman Biman Bose, CPI leaders Manju Kumar Mazumdar and Swapna Bandopadhyaya, FB leader Naren Chatterjee and RSP leader Manoj Bhattacharya. Present in the Congress headquarters to receive these leaders were WB congress president Somen Mitra and other leaders like Amitabh Chakraborty and Subhankar Sarkar.
The development comes in the backdrop of West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee statement on September 12 that only her party can fight against the BJP in the state as both the CPI (M) and the Congress have become “spent forces”.
In a bid to regain its lost political ground, West Bengal Congress on September 12 said the party has decided to launch joint movements with the CPI(M)- led Left Front across the state after the Durga Puja festival.
We all know that earlier also, the CPI (M) and the Congress had forged an alliance in West Bengal in 2016 Assembly polls, however, it failed to evoke much impact.
Even in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress-CPI(M) proposed alliance fell apart after both the parties failed to reach an agreement on seat-sharing deal.
Notwithstanding their inherent differences and past failures, they recognized a need to work together to fight against the “authoritarian” TMC government in the state and the BJP regime at the Centre. No doubt this forced marriage of convenience is based on the belief that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”.
Wait and watch. Only time will show the outcome of this Unity in Diversity.
